Karaim Language

A short extract from a song “Sahyšlar” (“Dreams”) written by Moisej Pilecki (1874-1938), a famous Karaim poet born in Trakai.

Sahyšlar

Ėrtia turup üvdian čychtym,
Biezdi kiezmia oramlarda,
Suv kyryjha diejin kieldim
Bijik tavnyn tabanynda.

Kimgia ajtym sahyšymny,
Tiuviul-mia bu tolhunlarha,
Nie jel siuriadir alarny
Astry jyrach kyryjlarha.

Dreams

Early in the morning
I left the house,
I was bored of strolling along the streets.
And I came up to the shore

At the foot of a big mountain.
To whom could I tell my thoughts,
If not to those waves
That are driven by the winds
To far away lands.
